Station Pier Redevelopment Project

About Station Pier

Station Pier is a heritage-listed facility and has played an important role in the lives of Victorians for more than 160 years.

The pier has been welcoming immigrants and visitors since the 1850s and has also been the place for farewelling our service men and women as they left for theatres of conflict. Find out about the history of Station Pier.

Today, Station Pier hosts the Spirit of Tasmania ferries as well as cruise ships from around the world. The number of ships arriving at Station Pier is growing each year as well as the sizes of the ships carrying more passengers.

Station Pier Redevelopment Project

Victorian Ports Corporation (Melbourne) (VPCM) received $5.8 million in funding as part of the 2018-19 Victorian budget. This funding will allow for the initial stages of planning and design for the Station Pier Redevelopment Project as well as provide minor upgrades to improve passenger experience.

The pier’s age, combined with increasing demand in ferry and cruise passenger capacity, has identified a significant need for investment in improved infrastructure and operational solutions. The proposed redevelopment ensures Victoria has long-term and reliable port infrastructure for the years to come.

VPCM is currently in the early stages of planning the pier’s infrastructure as it is critical to ensure Victoria can provide tourists with choice.

Making Station Pier competitive and modern for the cruise ship industry while retaining its rich history is important to all Victorians.

Community engagement

Initial community engagement regarding the proposed redevelopment of Station Pier took place between August and October 2018.
